Joy Ride: Sky Wheel Ride Planned for Strip

Clark County commissioners recently approved plans for a proposed 500-ft-tall sky wheel across from Mandalay Bay.  The scheme calls for a 9.6-acre amusement complex with up to seven rides, including a giant Ferris wheel similar to London Eye. The wheel would carry 40, 12-by-18-ft gondolas that could accommodate between 20 and 25 guests each. Developers David Gaffin and Howard Bulloch said the gondolas would be offered in several different configurations and could include dining.

The project would be built in two phases with a temporary 200-foot “sky wheel” in the first phase that would eventually get replaced with a larger, more permanent version that would take about 18 months to construct.

Other components call for a 21,000-sq-ft convention center and a 139,500-sq-ft retail, restaurant and entertainment venue to be built in a second phase.

No groundbreaking date is set, but the construction is expected to take about a year. The project would hire about 200 construction workers and create 200 permanent positions upon completion. Developers declined to disclose the cost.
