Jack Schaefer, a local construction industry leader, died on April 15 of pancreatic cancer. He was 64. Schaefer passed away while in hospice care in Las Vegas. Schaefer had served various leadership roles for the Nevada Contractors Association. 

Schaefer was a well known labor negotiator who also sat on several local construction union trusts and apprenticeship training boards, including those for the laborers, operating engineers and cement masons, among others. 

Born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, Jack Alan Schaefer served as a captain in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1969. He later lived and worked in Denver, Colorado, doing marketing work and running various businesses. His older brother, Dan, served as U.S. Representative (R-Colo.) from 1983 to 1999, but chose not to seek re-election. Dan Schaefer died in 2006, at age 70.

The Nevada Contractors Association (NCA) has named Sean Stewart as executive director.

The Nevada Contractors Association (NCA), a nonprofit trade group, recently named Sean Stewart of Aggregate Industries as 2011 chairman. Brent Conrad of Werdco B.C. is vice-chairman and Travis Burton of Perini Building Co. is secretary/treasurer. Other 2011 Board members include: Mike Olson, Olson Precast Co.; Mike Dean, M. J. Dean Construction; Kris Sundell, Stewart & Sundell Concrete; Guy Wells, Wells Cargo; Howdy Wells, Wells Cargo; Berlyn Miller, Berlyn Miller & Associates; Pat Miyahira, Maui One Excavating; Paul Bunker, Aztech Inspection Services; Jack Schaefer, Schaefer & Associates; and Pat Ward, Southern Nevada Paving.

 

   

 

Lori Lea Strategic Development Officer for JMA

JMA named Lori Lea as strategic development professional. She previously worked for Dekker/Perich/Sabatini.

 

The Nevada Resort Association named Virginia Valentine as president. She replaces Bill Bible who resigned earlier this year. Valentine has served as Clark County Manager since August 2006.

The Nevada Chapter of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors named Colliers International’s Dan Doherty as 2011 president. Other executivecommittee members include: Soozi Jones Walker as president-elect and secretary/treasurer, Chuck Witters as admissions chair, Mike Hillis as education chair, Greg Pancirov as programs chair, Mike DeLew as special events chair, Donna Alderson as sponsorship chair, Paul Sweetland as business development/ marketing chair, and Dean Willmore as retention/candidate programchair.

Nevada State Contractors Board executive officer Margi Grein received a special award for outstanding community and industry Service from Southern Nevada Home Builders Association 2010 President Nat Hodgson.

   
McCarthy Building Cos. Inc. Jason Howard

McCarthy Building Cos. Inc. promoted Jason Howard to preconstruction director for the firm’s Southern Nevada estimating group. Previously, Howard served as senior estimator in McCarthy’s Las Vegas office. 

   
Nevada Transportation Director Susan Martinovich
MARTINOVICH

Nevada Department of Transportation director Susan Martinovich has been elected president of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). She is the first woman to serve in that position. Martinovich, who has run NDOT since 2007 and been an employee since 1984, is on the executive committee of the Transportation Research Board. NDOT has 1,700 employees, a $700 million operating budget and 5,400 highway miles to oversee.

Carpenter Sellers Del Gatto Architects named Shaun Yaunch as project manager and Brian Miller as project coordinator.

Gov. Jim Gibbons appointed Renaissance Pools & Spas President Jim Alexander to the Nevada State Contractors Board. Meanwhile, the Board elected Kevin Burke chairman and Bruce King treasurer.
